The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) has reinforced its commitment to defence diplomacy and international cooperation during high-level engagements at the 19th Defence Services Asia (DSA) exhibition, held from 20 April 2026 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
In a key bilateral engagement, the Chief of the SA Army, Lieutenant General Lawrence Khulekani Mbatha, acting on behalf of the Chief of the SANDF, General Rudzani Maphwanya, paid a courtesy call on the Chief of the Malaysian Armed Forces, General Datuk Haji Malek Razak Bin Sulaiman. The meeting formed part of the South African delegation’s official programme at DSA 2026 and reflected the longstanding cordial relationship between the two armed forces.
Discussions focused on strengthening bilateral defence cooperation, enhancing military-to-military relations and identifying areas of mutual strategic interest. Both parties reaffirmed their commitment to continued collaboration in support of regional stability and broader global security objectives.
Lieutenant General Mbatha emphasised the importance of sustained defence diplomacy in an evolving security environment, highlighting the SANDF’s intent to deepen partnerships that support interoperability, capacity building and shared strategic understanding.
The broader South African delegation included Deputy Minister Major General (Ret.) Bantubonke Holomisa, Chief of the SA Landward Forces Lieutenant General Mbatha, Armscor Chairperson Dr Lesiba Mahapa and Acting High Commissioner of South Africa to Malaysia Me A Maseko. The team visited exhibition stands by key South African defence industry players including Armscor, Denel, Milkor and Reutech.
The engagements underscored South Africa’s dual focus on defence modernisation and industrial support. The delegation assessed emerging technologies, explored potential collaboration opportunities and reinforced the role of domestic defence industry partners in sustaining national capability.
From an Army perspective, participation at DSA 2026 highlighted a deliberate focus on modernisation, technological advancement and interoperability with international partners. The visit further reaffirmed support for state-owned entities such as Armscor and Denel as critical enablers of capability development and strategic autonomy.
South Africa’s presence at the exhibition reflects a proactive approach to defence diplomacy, strengthening international partnerships while positioning the SANDF as a capable and future-ready force within an increasingly complex global security environment.
