The Department of Defence has expressed concern regarding comments made by Vice Admiral Monde Lobese, Chief of the South African Navy, during the SA Navy Gala Dinner held over the past weekend. Vice Admiral Lobese, a senior member of the Military Command, reportedly made statements that were viewed as casting aspersions on the leadership of government.
In response, the Minister of Defence described the remarks as inappropriate, disingenuous and unfortunate, particularly given that the matter in question is already being addressed at multiple levels, from within the Department of Defence through to Parliament. The Minister has indicated that appropriate steps will be taken to address the outburst, which is especially concerning coming from a senior officer of Vice Admiral Lobese’s standing.
The Department emphasised that the views expressed by the Navy Chief at the event do not represent its official position. This incident underscores the importance of maintaining professionalism and decorum, particularly when speaking in public forums on sensitive matters.
