The Ghana Air Force has strengthened its operational capabilities with the delivery of a newly acquired Airbus H175 helicopter from France, marking a key milestone in the ongoing modernisation of its aviation fleet. The acquisition forms part of a broader defence procurement programme approved by Parliament aimed at enhancing the operational readiness and versatility of the Ghana Armed Forces.
The state-of-the-art helicopter was ferried from Marignane, France and arrived in Accra on Thursday, 5 March 2026 following the successful completion of all technical acceptance procedures with the manufacturer, Airbus Helicopters. The delivery flight showcased meticulous planning and execution, traversing Spain and North-West Africa before continuing south along the West African Atlantic coast and across several countries en route to Ghana.
Equipped with advanced avionics, high-performance engines and multi-role capabilities, the H175 is expected to play a pivotal role in a variety of missions including troop transport, search and rescue and maritime patrol operations. Defence analysts note that the helicopter’s introduction enhances the Air Force’s capacity to respond rapidly to domestic and regional security challenges.
The Ghana Air Force’s modernisation programme is part of a broader regional trend in West Africa where several countries are investing in advanced rotary-wing platforms to strengthen their national defence capabilities and improve humanitarian and disaster response operations.
Officials from the Ghana Ministry of Defence emphasised that this acquisition underscores the government’s commitment to maintaining a capable and technologically advanced military, ensuring that the nation is equipped to meet both contemporary and emerging security challenges.
With the Airbus H175 now operational, the Ghana Air Force can expand its operational reach, improve mission efficiency and enhance training opportunities for its personnel, further cementing its role as a professional and responsive air power within the region.
The delivery also reflects the continued partnership between Ghana and Airbus Helicopters, highlighting the importance of international collaboration in defence procurement and the adoption of modern aviation technologies to meet evolving operational requirements.
