Tata Advanced Systems Limited, a subsidiary of India’s Tata Group, has opened an armoured vehicle plant near Casablanca to support Morocco’s drive for defence industrialisation. The facility will produce 8×8 Wheeled Armoured Platform (WhAP) vehicles for the Moroccan Army and for export across Africa, according to Morocco’s defence administration.

The plant will initially source 35% of its components locally, with plans to raise this to 50% in line with Morocco’s strategy to reduce reliance on imports. In June the country passed legislation designed to stimulate domestic defence manufacturing and meet the needs of its armed forces.
The launch came a day after Morocco and India signed a bilateral defence cooperation agreement covering training, cyber defence, military health and industrial collaboration during a visit to Rabat by India’s defence minister.
