Comprehensive multi-agency security and intelligence operations have been fully activated across Durban as South Africa and the KwaZulu-Natal province host the 46th Ordinary Summit of Southern African Development Community (SADC) Heads of State and Government. The heightened security posture is designed to establish a safe and secure environment for 12 attending Heads of State, international delegates, local residents and visiting dignitaries.
Led by the National Joint Operational and Intelligence Structure (NATJOINTS), the high-visibility security operation brings together a broad coalition of state security, municipal law enforcement and emergency response entities. Integrated units include the South African Police Service (SAPS), the South African National Defence Force (SANDF), Durban Metro Police, provincial traffic law enforcement officials, the National Traffic Police Intervention Unit, National Airport Security and accredited private security personnel.
Speaking on the state of national readiness, SAPS Deputy National Commissioner for Policing and NATJOINTS Chairperson, Lieutenant General Tebello Mosikili, confirmed that detailed operational frameworks were successfully implemented ahead of the summit. The joint intelligence structure has established end-to-end security measures spanning King Shaka International Airport, primary highway arteries, strategic convoy routes, official summit venues and key public infrastructure.
Operational teams are working around the clock to manage tactical planning, VIP protection details, traffic flow management and rapid emergency response capabilities. The coordinated deployments ensure unhindered movement for diplomatic convoys while providing a reassuring, visible law enforcement presence for the broader KwaZulu-Natal community throughout the regional gathering.
