Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) troops deployed under the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) have successfully provided a joint security escort to a high-level United Nations delegation conducting a humanitarian assessment mission in southern Somalia.
The operation was carried out by KDF personnel based in Sector Two, Dhobley in close coordination with the Jubaland Intelligence and Security Agency (JISA). The joint escort ensured the safe movement of the UN delegation as it undertook field assessments aimed at evaluating humanitarian needs and the prevailing security situation in the area.
The visit forms part of ongoing United Nations efforts to assess the impact of prolonged conflict, insecurity and climate-related challenges on vulnerable communities across Jubaland. The findings from the mission are expected to inform future humanitarian programming and international assistance initiatives in the region.
KDF’s involvement highlights its continued commitment to supporting regional stability and enabling humanitarian access in Somalia. Operating under AUSSOM, Kenyan troops play a key role in securing critical supply routes, protecting civilian populations and facilitating the work of international organisations operating in high-risk environments.
The successful coordination between KDF and JISA underscores the importance of cooperation between international peace support forces and local security agencies. Such collaboration enhances situational awareness, strengthens operational effectiveness and contributes to the overall security framework necessary for humanitarian and development activities to take place.
AUSSOM, which succeeded the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS), remains focused on supporting Somali security institutions while maintaining pressure on extremist groups that continue to threaten peace and stability in the Horn of Africa.
The safe completion of the humanitarian assessment mission reflects the professionalism of the forces involved and reinforces the critical role of peace support operations in enabling lifesaving humanitarian work across conflict-affected regions.
