Air Force Base Bloemspruit marked a significant moment in its operational calendar on 19 March 2026 with the Change of Command Parade for 506 Squadron and the Change of Office for the Base Regimental Sergeant Major. The ceremonies showcased the South African Air Force’s (SAAF) unwavering commitment to discipline, operational readiness and leadership continuity.
Colonel Nico Swarts, outgoing Officer Commanding of 506 Squadron, delivered a heartfelt farewell, reflecting on a career dedicated to service and the professional development of SAAF personnel. Born in Beaufort West, Central Karoo, Col Swarts began his military career with the South African Army in 1987 before transferring to the Air Force in 1990. His distinguished service includes two tenures as Officer Commanding of 506 Squadron as well as leadership roles in 525 and 526 Squadrons, the Air Force Gymnasium and Defence Materiel Division.
Holding a B Law (LLB), a National Diploma in Human Resource Management and a National Diploma in Planning and Execution of Military Operations, Col Swarts is also qualified for admission as an attorney in the High Court of South Africa. In his farewell address, he expressed gratitude to his family, mentors, colleagues and squadron members, emphasising mentorship, leading from the front and supporting subordinates as hallmarks of effective leadership. He concluded with John C. Maxwell’s words: “The pessimist complains about the wind. The optimist expects it to change. The leader adjusts the sails.”
Lieutenant Colonel Edward Leshalabe assumed command of 506 Squadron following the handover. Born in Phokwane Village, Limpopo Province, Lt Col Leshalabe joined the SAAF in 1996 and has held roles ranging from instructor and operational postings to VIP protection and leadership across multiple squadrons. His deployments include training and integration missions in Burundi in 2008 and 2009. Promoted to Lieutenant Colonel in December 2024, he now leads 506 Squadron with a focus on operational readiness and mentorship.
The ceremony also featured the Change of Office for the Base Regimental Sergeant Major. Master Warrant Officer Selaelo Matongwane, outgoing RSM, handed over to Senior Warrant Officer Roland Baatjies, who brings decades of experience in protection services, leadership and personnel development. MWO Matongwane joined the SAAF in 1993 and has served in key operational and instructional roles including deployments to the Democratic Republic of Congo under Operation MISTRAL. SWO Baatjies, enlisted in 1989, has held positions across multiple Protection Squadrons, the School for Logistic Training and the Air Force Gymnasium, contributing extensively to operational effectiveness and personnel development.
The Change of Command Parade and RSM Change of Office symbolised both continuity and responsibility. With Lt Col Leshalabe and SWO Baatjies now at the helm, 506 Squadron and the Regimental Sergeant Major office are poised to continue their vital roles with dedication, professionalism and pride.
