Namibia’s Defence Force is marking its 35th anniversary with more than just fanfare — it’s signalling a serious step-up in battlefield mobility and regional readiness.
At a military parade at Grootfontein Air Base, the Milkor Bushcat, a South African-made 4×4 armoured personnel carrier (APC), took centre stage. Four Bushcats were on display, some equipped with remotely operated machine guns and advanced electro-optical surveillance systems — clear signs that the NDF is investing in smarter command and control capabilities.

Built on a rugged Iveco truck chassis for easy maintenance and parts availability, the Bushcat offers NATO STANAG Level 3A and 3B mine protection, withstanding blasts up to 8 kg under the hull or wheels, plus Level 2 ballistic protection against small arms fire.
It’s not just tough — it’s versatile. With a range of up to 1,000 km, a top speed of 110 km/h, and capacity for ten personnel, the Bushcat is built for troop transport, riot control, border patrol, medevac, or electronic warfare.
Originally showcased at AAD 2024 alongside Milkor’s Vanguard MRAP and 6×6 Frontier, the Bushcat’s deployment underscores Namibia’s shift towards regionally sourced, modular vehicles that can handle both local security operations and peacekeeping missions abroad.
Beyond the Bushcat: A Modernised Force
The parade also featured new and legacy hardware — from Brazilian Agrale Marrua light utility vehicles and South African RG32 APCs to Chinese WZ-523 IFVs, BM-21 rocket launchers, and locally built Wolf APCs.
President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah used the occasion to reinforce her administration’s commitment to modernisation and readiness, citing the NDF’s peacekeeping deployments in the DRC, Mozambique, and South Sudan, as well as upcoming joint drills with Botswana.
With the Bushcat now in its fleet, the NDF is making a clear statement: it intends to stay flexible, mobile, and capable of handling both domestic challenges and regional threats — while showing confidence in African-built defence solutions.
