The South African Air Force (SAAF) will see a significant leadership change as Maj Gen Carl Moatshe is appointed and substantively promoted to the rank of Lieutenant General, taking office as Chief of the Air Force effective 01 April 2026. He succeeds Lt Gen W.S. Mbambo, who will retire on 31 March 2026 after distinguished service.
Maj Gen Moatshe, a former C-130 pilot with 28 Squadron, former Officer Commanding of Airforce Base Ysterplaat and Chief Director Force Preparation, brings a wealth of operational and strategic experience to the role. His promotion underscores the Air Force’s commitment to continuity, professionalism and operational readiness as it navigates an era of modernisation and capability development.
Lt Gen Mbambo’s tenure has been marked by a focus on fleet modernisation, training excellence and the enhancement of South Africa’s air defence posture. His retirement concludes a career defined by dedication to the SAAF and the broader South African National Defence Force.
A parade to mark the change of command is scheduled to take place next week, formally welcoming Lt Gen Moatshe to his new role. With him at the helm, the SAAF looks poised to continue advancing its strategic objectives and maintaining regional air power excellence.
