The Ministry of Defence of Ukraine has formally codified and approved the MAC OWL (Sova) armoured vehicle for service with the Armed Forces of Ukraine. The designation officially recognizes the platform as the most highly protected locally produced armoured vehicle in its category.
The landmark certification represents a major milestone for Ukraine’s domestic defence sector and the long-term strategic partnership between Greek defence firm Paramount Industries Innovation Systems Greece (Paramount Greece) and Ukrainian defence manufacturer MAC HUB.
Battlefield-Driven Innovation and Class-Leading Survivability
The MAC OWL is built upon the combat-proven armoured hull architecture of Paramount’s Mbombe 4 Infantry Combat Vehicle. It integrates significant engineering adaptations, heavy localization and battlefield-driven innovations developed by Ukrainian engineers to withstand contemporary frontline threats.
According to official evaluation reports from the Ministry of Defence of Ukraine, the MAC OWL provides the highest levels of protection against mines and ambushes among domestically produced armoured vehicles. The engineering framework includes several distinct survival characteristics:
- Superior Armor Specification: The vehicle features the thickest side armour among comparable domestic and foreign vehicles in its category.
- Blast Certification: The monocoque armoured capsule and flat V-shaped blast-deflecting hull are certified to withstand detonations of up to 10kg TNT equivalent in strict accordance with STANAG 4569 standards.
- Drone Resilience: The architecture accommodates the integration of up to ten electronic warfare modules, specifically engineered to counter first-person view (FPV) loitering munitions and drone threats.
- Interior Enhancements: The crew compartment features comprehensive anti-fragmentation protection alongside specialized shock-absorbing seating systems to maximize occupant safety during high-energy impacts.
- Tactical Mobility: Utilizing a low-profile design optimized for reduced battlefield visibility, the platform relies on an independent suspension system to maintain high mobility across severely degraded or muddy terrain.
The extensive evaluation and testing program was informed directly by the harsh operational realities of the Russia–Ukraine war, where artillery fragmentation, improvised explosive devices (IEDs), minefields and commercial drone swarms dictate tactical movement.
A Sovereign Manufacturing Model Built for Modern Warfare
The successful deployment of the vehicle validates Paramount’s broader global industrial partnership model, which focuses on transferring advanced defence technology to partner nations to establish sovereign production lines. This localized approach enabled Ukraine to rapidly manufacture a next-generation Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) platform tailored precisely to its frontline requirements while simultaneously strengthening domestic industrial capacity.
“The codification and approval of the MAC OWL by the Ministry of Defence of Ukraine represents an extraordinary endorsement of the vehicle’s design, protection and operational effectiveness,” stated a spokesperson for Paramount Greece. “To be recognised by the Ukrainian Ministry of Defence as the best protected locally produced armoured vehicle in the country is a remarkable achievement for both MAC HUB and Paramount Greece.”
MAC HUB Director Oleksandr Dubyna emphasized that protecting crew lives within the expanding high-technology conflict zone was the driving force behind the design. By combining global armoured vehicle engineering with real-time combat data, the collaborative program has delivered a battle-ready platform built to save lives under the most punishing operational conditions in modern warfare
