Law enforcement intensified efforts against marine-related crimes with the rollout of Operation Phakisa across coastal areas of the Namakwa District from Wednesday 24 September to Sunday 28 September 2025.
Targeted operations were carried out in Port Nolloth, Kleinzee, Hondeklip Bay, Koingnaas, Groenrivier, Waterfall, Brazil and Alexander Bay.
Several South African Police Service (SAPS) units working alongside the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, the Department of Home Affairs, Customs, Traffic authorities and SANParks mounted a coordinated response to combat criminal activity impacting the marine environment.
The operation resulted in one arrest for contravening the Immigration Act and fines totalling R15 400. Offences included violations of the Road Traffic Act 93 of 1996 and breaches of the Marine Living Resources Act 18 of 1998.
