Denel is emerging from one of the most challenging periods in its history and is confident that it is firmly on the path to recovery.
The company is currently implementing a critical turnaround strategy aimed at optimising operations, strengthening delivery capacity and rebuilding trust among industry partners, employees, organised labour, suppliers and end-users in the defence sector.
Significant support from its new shareholder, the Department of Defence, is enabling Denel to integrate more fully into the broader defence community. This partnership enhances Denel’s ability to secure a greater share of the international defence market and expand its global footprint.
The 2025 Annual Report highlights strong progress in the company’s transformation journey. Denel is laying the foundation for sustainable growth and operational excellence, stabilising its core capabilities and repositioning itself as a trusted provider of critical defence solutions. In collaboration with the Board, several strategic success factors have been identified as essential to long-term sustainability. Denel must build a healthy order book by securing contracts from both local and international clients. It will prioritise programme delivery to ensure repeat business at home and abroad. The company will ensure that adequate working capital is available to support future growth, including improved cash-flow management. It will strengthen ethical leadership and reinforce a robust governance culture across the value chain. Denel is upgrading its ICT systems and strengthening controls to ensure accurate and credible financial information. It will also address internal control deficiencies to restore stakeholder confidence.
In recent years, the Auditor-General raised substantial concerns regarding Denel’s internal controls. The company is now working closely with the AGSA to implement corrective measures, including the rebuilding of a strong internal audit function. A comprehensive fraud and corruption prevention strategy aligned with international best practice has also been introduced, featuring lifestyle audits for senior management and executives. A renewed organisational culture is being embedded to ensure that past deficiencies are fully resolved.
All senior management positions have now been filled, enabling Denel to attract top specialists in engineering, financial management, auditing, strategic leadership and business development. This strengthened leadership team is driving the company through the final phase of restructuring and into a new era of stability and growth.
These strategic interventions have significantly reinforced Denel’s position in a highly competitive global defence and technology environment, securing both its relevance and long-term viability.
Denel’s role in safeguarding South Africa’s sovereign defence capabilities remains critical. As a cornerstone of national security, the company ensures that the nation retains control over advanced technologies, systems and platforms essential for operational readiness and strategic independence.
