South Africa’s state-owned defence company Denel is showing encouraging signs of recovery following an extensive restructuring process aimed at stabilising operations and restoring confidence across the defence sector.
Group CEO Tsepo Monaheng says the company is emerging from a challenging period in its history and is now firmly on a path toward sustainability and growth. “The restructuring process continues and will enable Denel to optimise operations, bolster delivery capacity and rebuild trust among industry partners, suppliers and end-users within the defence sector,” he explains.
A key pillar of the turnaround strategy has been the strengthening of governance and internal controls. Denel has implemented improved corporate governance frameworks alongside robust internal control systems. In addition, a wide-ranging fraud and corruption prevention strategy has been introduced, aligned with international standards and including lifestyle audits for senior management and executives.
Leadership stability has also been prioritised, with all senior management positions now filled. According to Monaheng, Denel has successfully attracted top talent in specialised fields such as leadership, auditing, financial management and business development to guide the organisation through the final stages of restructuring and beyond.
The company is also benefiting from increased institutional support. Engagement with its Shareholder Representative and the Department of Defence is enabling closer integration into South Africa’s broader defence ecosystem while strengthening its ability to support the South African National Defence Force and expand its international footprint.
Denel’s 2025 Annual Report highlights measurable progress in its recovery journey. The company is working to ensure that each business unit is sustainable on its own, while reinforcing core capabilities and repositioning itself as a reliable provider of critical defence technologies and systems.
Monaheng notes that these strategic interventions have strengthened Denel’s position in a competitive and rapidly evolving global defence and technology environment.
Despite recent challenges, Denel remains central to South Africa’s sovereign defence capability. The company continues to play a critical role in maintaining control over advanced technologies, systems and platforms essential for operational readiness and strategic independence.
