On 19 March 2026, the SA Army College hosted a certificate ceremony for the inaugural Military Planners Course, marking a significant step in professional development for the South African National Defence Force.
The ceremony began with scripture and a prayer led by Chaplain S. Zungu who encouraged learners to uphold integrity and diligence in their work. Warrant Officer Class 1 N.F. Mafagane facilitated the proceedings while Second Lieutenant Munyai read the SANDF Code of Conduct.
Major General J.K. Thys, Deputy Chief of the SA Army, delivered the keynote address outlining the origins of the pilot course and emphasising the importance of strategic planning and discipline in military organisations. He congratulated the learners for their dedication and professionalism and encouraged them to apply their new skills with confidence and integrity in their respective roles.
Awards were presented to the top achievers: Lt Col G.M.K. Makola and Lt Col C. Oosthuizen placed third, Capt A.J. Hanekom placed second and Lt W.I. van der Plank was named Best Overall Learner. All participants successfully completed the theoretical component and will continue with practical applications in their units.
The ceremony acknowledged the contributions of Colonel J. Potgieter, Acting Commandant of the SA Army College, the Community of Experts Practitioners, Branch Commander Lt Col J.T. Mpete, the Directing Staff and unit staff who made the course a success.
This first cohort of military planners represents a vital investment in the SANDF’s future, ensuring a new generation of personnel equipped with the skills and knowledge to enhance operational planning and strategic effectiveness.
