South Africa is taking a significant step to strengthen its border security with a fleet of up to 500 armored personnel carriers, following Armscor’s announcement of a preferred supplier for the project. The initiative is aimed at supporting the SANDF in securing the country’s 4,800-kilometre frontier, from Namibia to the Indian Ocean, against illegal crossings, smuggling, and incursions.
The tender, ELWS/2024/71, calls for a mix of vehicles: 210 standard patrol carriers, 144 command posts, and 108 ambulances. Each vehicle is designed to carry at least 1.5 tons of payload while handling a gross vehicle mass of 13.5 tons. Protection standards include NATO STANAG Level 1 ballistic resistance and Level 2 mine protection, reflecting the low-to-medium threat environment along South Africa’s borders.
This procurement replaces an aging fleet of over 400 Toyota Land Cruisers, which, while functional, lack the armor necessary for sustained operations in potentially hostile areas. The National Treasury has earmarked R500 million to fund the program, highlighting the strategic priority of maintaining a persistent and protected presence in remote regions.
Financial approval from the South African Army is still pending. If granted, first deliveries could begin within a year, with the initial 60 units expected early and the remainder phased in over three years. The program follows more than a year of evaluations and adjustments to ensure vehicles meet the practical demands of border patrol missions.
