Ground School 01/2026, designated “Sky Hackers,” has concluded at 80 Air Navigation School at Air Force Base Ysterplaat, marking the successful completion of foundational academic instruction for South African Air Force (SAAF) pupil pilots and student navigators. Running from January 19 to June 26, 2026, the rigorous six-month program served as the essential theoretical prerequisite before candidates advance to practical flight operations and advanced navigation training phases.
The course cohort comprised nine primary candidates—five pupil navigators and four pupil pilots—alongside four refresher candidates preparing for Navigation Wings Course 72. The refresher participants attended the program to reinforce critical aviation knowledge and align their core competencies ahead of entering the demanding operational navigation phase.
Throughout the half-year training cycle, students completed a broad curriculum built upon Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL) theoretical modules. The coursework covered key principles of aviation, advanced navigation, meteorology, air law, technical aircraft systems, human performance and flight planning. The instructional regimen challenged candidates to maintain high academic standards, operational discipline and professional rigour expected of military flight personnel.
Under the leadership of Course Commander Major D. T. Mogano, the class achieved a 100% pass rate across all written examinations and practical evaluations. Individual academic honours were awarded to Candidate Officer M. G. Ngwenya as the top overall achiever and Candidate Officer M. Silima as the top refresher candidate, while class leadership and team cohesion were directed by Candidate Officer S. N. Nyanda. The successful execution of Ground School 01/2026 underscores 80 Air Navigation School’s commitment to maintaining rigorous training standards for future aircrew across the SAAF.
