The South African Navy (SAN) is deepening its strategic and professional relationship with the Indian Navy through a mix of operational deployments, leadership engagements and specialised training exchanges.
This partnership was highlighted in February 2026 when the SAN frigate SAS AMATOLA visited Visakhapatnam, India, to participate in Exercise MILAN 2026 and the International Fleet Review 2026, hosted by the Indian Navy. The deployment formed part of a broader multinational engagement programme uniting naval forces from across the Indian Ocean and Indo-Pacific regions.
During the visit, Vice Admiral Monde Lobese, Chief of the South African Navy, attended the Conclave of Chiefs of the Indian Ocean Naval Symposium (IONS). The forum brought together senior naval leaders from Indian Ocean littoral states to discuss shared challenges including maritime security, humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HADR), search and rescue coordination and maritime domain awareness.
Vice Admiral Lobese’s participation underscored the SAN’s commitment to structured naval diplomacy and professional dialogue within the region. These high-level interactions help align strategic perspectives, strengthen professional networks and advance cooperative maritime initiatives that build trust, confidence and stability at sea.
Beyond exercises and port visits, cooperation increasingly includes specialised training. SAN submariners and technical personnel have attended advanced courses at Indian naval training establishments, particularly focused on submarine operations and underwater safety. These exchanges directly enhance operational readiness while fostering professional development, demonstrating the practical dimension of the bilateral partnership.
The evolving SAN–Indian Navy relationship represents a balanced blend of naval diplomacy, operational cooperation and professional training. Through sustained engagement at strategic, operational and technical levels, both navies continue to cultivate a partnership grounded in professionalism, mutual respect and shared maritime interests across the Indian Ocean Region.
