Trieste, Italy – Italian towage company Tripmare has significantly strengthened its operational capabilities with the delivery of two Damen RSD Tug 2513 vessels, amid rising maritime traffic and larger vessel arrivals at the port of Trieste.

The new tugs, named Captain Cat and Med Rigel, were constructed at Damen’s Song Cam Shipyard and are set to arrive in Italy by August. Their arrival comes as Tripmare phases out an older tractor and ASD tug, in favour of Damen’s versatile RSD 2513 platform—an innovative design that combines the capabilities of both ASD and tractor tugs for “always bow first” operation.
The RSD Tug 2513 features Damen’s patented Twin Fin skeg for enhanced stability and manoeuvrability, enabling safe and efficient handling of next-generation vessels, such as MSC’s 24,000 TEU container ship Nicola Mastro.
“We are proud to introduce this modern, powerful, and compact design that prioritises environmental sustainability,” said Tripmare CEO Alberto Cattaruzza. “We look forward to welcoming these innovative tugs to Trieste.”
Damen has integrated several custom features for Tripmare, including:
- FiFi1 fire-fighting systems
- Oil recovery capability
- A third generator
- IMO Tier III-ready modular exhaust infrastructure, with Damen’s in-house Marine NOX Reduction System
These enhancements align with EU emission targets and modern maritime standards.
Antonio Marte of Damen commented:
“We are proud to welcome Tripmare onboard the Damen journey. These tugs represent a step-change in fleet optimisation and hybrid towage versatility.”
Additional innovations in the RSD Tug 2513 include:
- Damen Safety Glass for crew protection
- Spring-mounted superstructure for reduced vibration and noise
- Hybrid box and keel cooling system
- Triton IoT platform for real-time diagnostics and emissions monitoring
CFD-optimised hull forms further contribute to fuel savings and emission reductions, reinforcing Damen’s commitment to sustainable maritime technology. This delivery marks a strategic milestone for both Damen and Tripmare, positioning the port of Trieste for future readiness in a rapidly evolving global shipping environment.
