The Armaments Corporation of South Africa (Armscor) has officially launched a Drone Pilot Training Programme in partnership with Ntsu Aviation Academy. Rolled out on 27 May 2026 as a core part of Armscor’s Enterprise and Supplier Development (ESD) initiative, this partnership targets socio-economic transformation by funding and training emerging, black-owned businesses and youth entrepreneurs to enter the commercial unmanned aviation sector.
The initiative lowers the high financial and regulatory barriers to entry typically associated with commercial drone operations in South Africa. Candidates will undergo rigorous training at Ntsu Aviation Academy—a South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA) accredited facility—to earn their official Remote Pilot Certificates (RPC). The comprehensive curriculum covers SACAA air law, aviation meteorology, flight planning, simulator prep and live flight practicals.
By certifying these emerging enterprises, Armscor and Ntsu Aviation are positioning local small businesses to secure lucrative contracts across high-growth industries. Licensed graduates will be equipped to provide specialized commercial services, including precision agriculture mapping, infrastructure inspections for state utilities, mining surveys and advanced security surveillance. Ultimately, this strategic investment injects critical Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) skills into the local economy, turning grassroots startups into compliant, competitive suppliers within the national tech and defense supply chains.
