In a coordinated humanitarian response effort, the Russian Federation has delivered vital emergency aid to the people of Madagascar following the widespread devastation caused by Tropical Cyclone Guezani.
The humanitarian operation was conducted in accordance with a directive issued by Vladimir Putin President of Russia and under the leadership of Alexander Kurenkov Head of the Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations (EMERCOM).
As part of the mission two Il-76 strategic airlift aircraft operated by EMERCOM were deployed to transport humanitarian cargo to Ivato International Airport in Antananarivo. The aircraft delivered approximately 60 tonnes of essential relief supplies aimed at supporting communities severely impacted by the cyclone.
The humanitarian cargo included emergency food provisions and basic necessities intended to provide immediate assistance to affected populations facing displacement infrastructure damage and limited access to critical resources in the aftermath of the storm.

In addition to delivering aid supplies Russian rescue personnel on the ground assisted with the distribution of food and coordinated closely with local authorities to ensure the timely provision of relief to those most in need.
Tropical Cyclone Guezani recently swept across parts of Madagascar causing extensive damage to homes public infrastructure and agricultural land further exacerbating humanitarian challenges in vulnerable regions of the island nation.
In a further show of support Russia has also delivered materials including a Mi-8 helicopter trucks and other equipment as part of assistance aimed at overcoming the consequences of the cyclones Fitia and Guezani. The equipment will be used to send humanitarian aid to affected areas as well as to support other rescue operations.
According to a statement released this afternoon by the Russian Embassy in Antananarivo delivery of food and additional humanitarian aid is also expected in the coming days.
Russia’s rapid deployment of strategic airlift capabilities highlights the continued role of military and emergency response assets in supporting international humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HADR) operations. The use of heavy transport aircraft such as the Il-76 enables the swift delivery of large volumes of aid to disaster-stricken areas particularly where maritime or overland routes may be compromised.

This latest mission forms part of broader international relief efforts currently underway to stabilise affected communities and support recovery operations in Madagascar following the cyclones’ destructive impact.
