The South African Navy (SAN) frigate SAS AMATOLA has successfully arrived in India to participate in the International Fleet Review 2026, hosted by the Indian Navy in Visakhapatnam. This prestigious event brought together naval forces from over seventy countries and numerous warships in a ceremonial and professional gathering aimed at strengthening maritime cooperation, fostering mutual understanding and reinforcing shared responsibility for stability at sea. South Africa’s presence reaffirmed its commitment to collective security and its role as a key maritime partner in the Indian Ocean Region.
During the review, SAS AMATOLA served as a visible demonstration of South Africa’s continued involvement in global maritime affairs. The ship’s company conducted itself with professionalism, upholding naval tradition and discipline and reflecting the high standards expected of representatives of the Republic.

International Fleet Reviews go beyond ceremonial displays; they are instruments of defence diplomacy. They promote cooperation in critical areas such as maritime safety, humanitarian assistance and disaster relief, search and rescue and coordinated responses to non-traditional maritime threats. By participating in the review and associated engagements, the SAN strengthened bilateral relations with India while engaging a broader international community of navies committed to maintaining secure sea lines of communication and adherence to international maritime norms.
Vice Admiral Monde Lobese, Chief of the South African Navy, attended senior leadership engagements with counterparts from participating nations, including high-level discussions on cooperation, information sharing and humanitarian response. These interactions reinforced defence diplomacy objectives and strengthened relationships with partner navies.
Following the Fleet Review, SAS AMATOLA’s programme in India continues with engagements at the Indian Ocean Naval Symposium and Exercise MILAN 2026. These activities include harbour interactions, professional exchanges and coordinated multinational maritime operations aimed at improving interoperability and shared understanding among participating navies.

This deployment comes amid public discourse regarding funding constraints and limited sea-going opportunities. The successful participation of SAS AMATOLA demonstrates operational readiness and institutional resilience. For the sailors on board, the deployment offers valuable exposure to multinational naval operations and professional maritime engagement. For South Africa, it reinforces national visibility within the maritime domain and underscores the country’s enduring interest in ocean security and stability.
Significantly, this deployment marks the first operational command for Captain (SA Navy) Zanele Madiba, the newly appointed Officer Commanding of SAS AMATOLA. Captain Madiba is the first female officer in the South African Navy to command a frigate and was the only female commanding officer among participating nations at Exercise MILAN 2026. Her appointment drew commendation from the Chief of Staff of the Indian Navy following her formal introduction by Vice Admiral Lobese.
Through its participation, SAS AMATOLA continues to fly the South African flag internationally, strengthen partnerships and demonstrate the Navy’s unwavering commitment to maritime cooperation and global security.
