Cape Town’s most unique maritime open day is back as the 2026 SA Navy Festival takes over the East Dockyard at Simon’s Town Naval Base from Friday 17 April to Sunday 19 April. Entry is free and the event runs daily from 10:00 to 17:00.
Billed as a premier maritime event on the national calendar the festival gives the public a rare opportunity to step inside one of South Africa’s most historic naval bases and experience the South African Navy up close. Visitors will be able to explore the harbour, view naval platforms and engage directly with sailors, specialists and support units.
One of the major highlights will be guided tours of selected vessels including a Type 209 submarine alongside static displays and capability demonstrations from search and rescue teams, firefighting units and other specialised naval elements. The South African Navy Band will also feature throughout the weekend with live performances adding to the festive atmosphere.
Adding to the excitement a SAAF Lynx maritime helicopter is also set to take part showcasing airborne maritime capability alongside the naval programme.
Beyond the military displays visitors can expect a family-friendly environment with food stalls, children’s entertainment and a lively dockyard atmosphere throughout the weekend.
The historic setting of Simon’s Town adds further significance to the event with the naval base forming part of South Africa’s maritime heritage dating back centuries. Today it remains a key operational hub for the SA Navy.
For those planning to attend public transport is strongly recommended. Metrorail Western Cape will operate trains between Cape Town and Simon’s Town over the weekend with return tickets costing around R20 making it the most convenient option given expected crowds and limited parking.
The SA Navy Festival continues to be one of the country’s standout defence and maritime public events combining operational showcases with heritage, education and family entertainment in one of the Western Cape’s most scenic locations.
