Chief of the South African Army, Lieutenant General Lawrence Khulekani Mbatha, led a senior delegation on an official working visit to the Russian Federation to advance bilateral defence diplomacy and enhance professional military exchanges. The bilateral engagements focused on expanding cooperative frameworks between the South African Army and the Ground Forces of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation across training, officer development and shared operational expertise.
Upon arrival at the parade grounds, Lieutenant General Mbatha was formally received by his counterpart, Deputy Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Ground Forces, Lieutenant General Alexander Anatolyevich Matovnikov. The official itinerary combined high-level strategic consultations with formal ceremonial protocols reflecting enduring diplomatic and military ties between the two nations.
As part of the ceremonial proceedings, the South African delegation participated in a wreath-laying ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Moscow. The gesture paid tribute to fallen service members while reinforcing the South African Army’s commitment to international military remembrance and professional values.
The delegation subsequently visited the Moscow Combined Arms School, where they were hosted by school head Major General Pelipai Sergei Vasilievich. Discussions cantered on modernizing professional military education, officer development curricula and leadership training paradigms, culminating in an official gift presentation by Lieutenant General Mbatha to mark bilateral goodwill.
The official visit concluded with high-level staff talks between Lieutenant General Mbatha and Lieutenant General Matovnikov. Discussions focused on practical cooperation mechanisms, including joint training initiatives, institutional knowledge sharing and ongoing exchanges of military expertise designed to foster long-term defence partnerships rooted in mutual respect and military excellence.
