Türkiye’s defence innovation powerhouse, ASELSAN, has successfully completed what is now recognised as the world’s most comprehensive modernisation of a MEKO-class frigate, upgrading the TCG ORUÇREİS under the ambitious BARBAROS Mid-Life Upgrade (MLU) programme. This marks a transformative leap in naval combat capability and positions ASELSAN as a global frontrunner in indigenous warship upgrade solutions.

A Strategic Naval Reset for Türkiye
Commissioned by the Turkish Presidency of Defence Industries (SSB), the BARBAROS-MLU programme was launched to extend the lifespan, expand the mission scope, and radically enhance the survivability of Türkiye’s BARBAROS-class frigates. ASELSAN, as prime contractor, led a 21-system refit—delivering unmatched capability upgrades across radar, electronic warfare, fire control, weapons, comms, navigation, and sonar domains.
“This is the most extensive MEKO-class modernisation ever achieved,” said Ahmet Akyol, ASELSAN President & CEO. “We’ve demonstrated that Türkiye is ready to lead in scalable, indigenous naval warfare solutions.”
