Czech aircraft manufacturer Aero Vodochody is renewing its long-standing legacy in Africa’s skies with the launch of the Skyfox — a next-generation light jet designed for modern air forces balancing tight budgets and the urgent need to modernise.
Unveiled at the 4th African Air Force Forum in Lagos, the Skyfox — officially designated the L-39NG (“Next Generation”) — builds on the DNA of the iconic L-39 Albatross. The classic Albatross trained generations of pilots and flew light attack missions for over 17 African countries, including Algeria, Nigeria, Uganda, and Ghana.

“The Skyfox blends modern tech with the rugged heritage of the Albatross. We’re not just offering a new jet — we’re continuing a trusted partnership,” says Guillaume Dujardin, Aero’s Regional Sales Director.
A Familiar Platform, Upgraded for New Missions
First flown in 2018 and certified for military use in 2020, the Skyfox is now in full production and already in service with the Czech Air Force’s Flight Training Centre. For African air forces, the pitch is simple: a modern light jet that keeps pilot training and light combat affordable.
Key selling points include:
- Advanced training for 4th and 5th-gen fighter pilots
- Multi-role capability for border patrol, ground support, and counterinsurgency
- Cost-effective operations with low fuel and maintenance demands
- A robust ecosystem for training, maintenance, and lifecycle support

Equipped with a Williams FJ44-4M turbofan, full glass cockpit, and modern avionics, the Skyfox bridges the gap between basic trainers and front-line fighters — a compelling fit for air forces upgrading legacy fleets.
A Proven African Footprint
Aero’s deep roots in Africa give it a unique edge. The original L-39 still serves in Algeria, Nigeria, Egypt, and other countries. While the Skyfox’s rollout has faced funding delays in places like Ghana and Senegal, Aero is playing the long game.
“We’re not just chasing sales — we’re building long-term partnerships with training, MRO, and local capacity,” Dujardin says.
Facing competition from rivals like Leonardo’s M-346, Aero is banking on its trusted brand, affordability, and familiarity to hold its ground.
A Strategic Fit for Budget-Conscious Modernisation
As more African air forces face growing regional threats, limited funding, and the need for pilot standardisation, the Skyfox offers a flexible, proven solution backed by decades of operational history. For Aero Vodochody, it’s not just a new jet — it’s a chance to reclaim its place as Africa’s go-to partner for light jets that deliver real value where it counts: in the air and on the ground.
