Airbus Helicopters and Leonardo are set to launch a strategic architecture study for the NH90 Block 2, the next major evolution of NATO’s flagship multi-role military helicopter. This initiative, driven by a request from the NATO Helicopter Management Agency (NAHEMA), aims to future-proof the NH90 for decades of operational relevance.

The study will define the long-term upgrade roadmap for the NH90, including enhanced modular avionics, improved variant commonality, faster maintenance workflows, and next-gen digital combat features such as advanced connectivity and crewed-uncrewed teaming.
With contracting expected before year-end, the Block 2 study will guide NATO and EU member states on future capability decisions in alignment with broader next-generation rotorcraft programmes.
“We believe NH90 will play a central role in Europe’s defence future,” said Bruno Even, CEO of Airbus Helicopters. “Block 2 will build on existing upgrades while integrating disruptive new technologies.”
Gian Piero Cutillo, Managing Director of Leonardo Helicopters, echoed the sentiment, stating that the study will complement the ongoing Software Release 3 / Block 1 upgrade and reflect NAHEMA’s strategic vision.
With over 500 aircraft delivered and 300,000+ flight hours across allied forces, the NH90 remains a NATO workhorse. This latest effort by Airbus and Leonardo signals a bold step in evolving the platform to meet tomorrow’s battlefield demands.
