Ghana is in mourning following the deaths of Defence Minister Dominic Nitiwul and Environment Minister Kwaku Afriyie, who were among eight people killed in a military helicopter crash in the Ashanti region. The aircraft went down near the village of Sikaman during what officials described as a “routine internal security operation.” The Ghana Armed Forces confirmed that all eight occupants – including senior military officers and crew – perished in the crash.

The government has launched an investigation into the cause of the incident. Preliminary reports indicate the helicopter encountered technical difficulties shortly after takeoff. President Nana Akufo-Addo called the tragedy “a devastating blow to the nation,” expressing condolences to the families and praising the ministers for their “unwavering dedication to public service.”
The deaths of two sitting ministers in a single defence-related incident are unprecedented in Ghana’s democratic era and raise questions about aircraft maintenance and operational oversight within the armed forces. Military funerals are expected later this week, with flags ordered to fly at half-mast.
