Minister of Defence and Military Veterans, Ms Angie Motshekga, joined Deputy President Paul Mashatile as part of South Africa’s ministerial delegation at the Inaugural Binational Commission (BNC) with the Republic of Türkiye. The BNC, held in Türkiye, represents a historic milestone in the two countries’ diplomatic and defence relations, providing a high-level platform to strengthen cooperation across political, economic, and security spheres.
The Commission is designed to deepen bilateral ties across key sectors including defence, trade, industry, science, education, and cultural exchange. Minister Motshekga’s participation reflects South Africa’s commitment to enhancing defence collaboration, facilitating joint training, promoting capacity-building initiatives, and exploring opportunities for industrial cooperation in defence technology and logistics support.
In the defence sphere, discussions at the BNC are expected to focus on areas such as strategic military partnerships, technology transfer, joint exercises, and peacekeeping cooperation, aiming to bolster both nations’ operational readiness and regional security contributions. The engagement further signals South Africa’s intent to leverage international partnerships to strengthen its defence capabilities while fostering mutually beneficial industrial linkages with Türkiye’s defence sector.
Beyond defence, the BNC underscores a broader commitment to advancing economic and social ties. Trade, investment, education, scientific research, and cultural exchange were highlighted as priority areas, reflecting a comprehensive approach to bilateral engagement. Both countries expressed a shared vision for promoting peace, stability, and sustainable development regionally and globally, anchored in mutual respect, strategic collaboration, and enduring friendship.
Minister Motshekga’s presence alongside the Deputy President and the ministerial delegation reaffirms South Africa’s dedication to fostering long-term strategic partnerships, ensuring that defence, industrial and diplomatic cooperation remain central to the evolving South Africa–Türkiye relationship. The outcomes of the inaugural BNC are expected to set the foundation for subsequent engagements, joint initiatives, and high-level defence dialogue between the two nations.
