Personnel from the Djibouti Coast Guard and EUNAVFOR ASPIDES conducted a combined maritime exercise onboard the Italian frigate Italian Frigate Luigi Rizzo on 5 May further strengthening interoperability and operational readiness in the strategically important Red Sea region.
The exercise brought together maritime security personnel from both forces to enhance coordination, communication and joint operational capabilities in response to evolving regional security challenges. Conducted aboard the advanced FREMM-class frigate the training focused on improving tactical cooperation and the ability to operate seamlessly during maritime security operations.
The participation of the Djibouti Coast Guard highlights the growing importance of regional partnerships in safeguarding vital international shipping routes that pass through the Bab-el-Mandeb Strait and the Gulf of Aden. The region remains a critical maritime corridor linking Europe, the Middle East and Asia while also facing threats including piracy, smuggling and attacks on commercial vessels.
EUNAVFOR ASPIDES was established by the European Union to help protect freedom of navigation and maritime security in the Red Sea and surrounding waters. The operation has played an increasing role in escorting and protecting merchant shipping amid heightened regional tensions.
The Italian Navy frigate Italian Frigate Luigi Rizzo provided an ideal platform for the joint exercise showcasing the vessel’s advanced surveillance, command and maritime security capabilities. The cooperation exercise also demonstrated the commitment of international and regional partners to maintaining stability and ensuring the safe flow of global trade through one of the world’s busiest maritime chokepoints.
The combined training exercise reflects the continued emphasis on multinational cooperation as naval and coast guard forces adapt to increasingly complex maritime security environments across the Horn of Africa and Red Sea region.
