HAVELSAN, one of Türkiye’s foremost defence and technology enterprises, is redefining the future of armoured warfare training with its advanced tank simulation ecosystem for the ALTAY Main Battle Tank (MBT). Developed in close coordination with the Turkish Land Forces’ class schools and training centres, the programme delivers an integrated training architecture designed to elevate the readiness and efficiency of modern armoured units.
A Unified Ecosystem for Training Excellence
At the heart of HAVELSAN’s approach lies a comprehensive training hub that merges classroom learning with open and semi-open mock-up/simulator environments and dedicated virtual reality (VR) laboratories. This multi-domain ecosystem enables tank crews, technicians, and instructors to operate within a cohesive environment where theoretical knowledge seamlessly transitions into practical application.
The system’s hybrid design—combining physical mechanical structures with virtual and augmented reality (AR) components—allows participants to experience operational missions, fault scenarios, and maintenance procedures under highly realistic conditions. Multi-camera systems stream live exercises to large classroom displays, allowing instructors to monitor and evaluate multiple groups simultaneously, enhancing training efficiency and oversight.
Immersive Simulation and Maintenance Training
HAVELSAN’s training architecture covers the full spectrum of individual and crew-level instruction across user operation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and emergency procedures. This includes scenario-based exercises designed for the ALTAY’s Fire Control, Communications, and Command-and-Control subsystems.
A key innovation within this ecosystem is the Virtual Maintenance and Fault Simulation System, which models the ALTAY’s intricate electrical and cabling network in three dimensions. Trainees can follow real maintenance procedures within a digital interface, using virtual measurement tools to identify faults, conduct diagnostics, and execute step-by-step repairs. This approach not only accelerates learning but also familiarises crews with internal systems that would otherwise be inaccessible during traditional training.
Dynamic Realism: The Live Turret Training Model
Complementing the virtual systems, HAVELSAN has developed one of Türkiye’s first large-scale Live Turret Training Models, featuring a domestically designed motion system. Incorporating real turret and hull components, the platform replicates authentic battlefield dynamics—delivering motion, recoil, and environmental feedback that mirror live conditions.
This dynamic system provides a sustainable and repeatable training capability, reducing wear on operational tanks and minimising the logistical footprint typically associated with live exercises. It ensures crews can rehearse mission-critical operations and weapons handling in a safe yet highly realistic setting.
A Scalable and Sustainable Training Ecosystem
Drawing on decades of expertise in simulation engineering, systems integration, and defence training technologies, HAVELSAN has structured its ALTAY programme around long-term sustainability and scalability. Under the current scope, the company will deliver 44 distinct product types, totalling 94 training products, across 10 batches. The first batch is scheduled for delivery at the end of 2025, with subsequent batches extending over the following three years.
This modular delivery schedule supports the continuous evolution of Türkiye’s armoured training infrastructure, allowing for technology updates, software integration, and system refinements in response to operational feedback.
Global Impact and Export Potential
Beyond national defence applications, HAVELSAN’s simulation technologies are positioned to serve international partners seeking cost-effective, interoperable solutions for MBT training. The ALTAY training ecosystem adheres to NATO standards, ensuring compatibility and adaptability across multiple user nations.
By reducing reliance on real tanks—along with their associated operating costs in fuel, maintenance, and spare parts—the simulation systems deliver significant cost savings while maintaining the highest levels of operational realism. This efficiency aligns with the global priorities of modern armed forces: readiness, safety, and sustainability.
Shaping the Future of Digital Armoured Training
Through its pioneering simulation systems for the ALTAY Main Battle Tank, HAVELSAN is reinforcing Türkiye’s reputation as a leader in digital defence transformation. The integration of hybrid simulation technologies, immersive virtual environments, and dynamic physical platforms represents a forward-looking model for armoured warfare training—one that balances operational authenticity with efficiency and technological innovation.
As global militaries adapt to the demands of complex, multi-domain battlefields, HAVELSAN’s solutions provide a blueprint for how simulation can enhance both preparedness and resilience in modern land operations.
