Tomorrow, 29 May, the world observes the International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers — a day to honour the bravery, dedication, and sacrifice of men and women serving in UN peacekeeping operations. Since 1948, over two million peacekeepers have participated in more than 70 UN missions, striving to maintain peace and security in some of the world’s most volatile regions.
The theme for 2025, “The Future of UN Peacekeeping,” calls for transformation and innovation to address modern global challenges such as misinformation, terrorism, climate-related insecurity, and transnational crime.
In proud alignment with this international recognition, the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) is preparing to commemorate the day with a formal ceremony at the Department of Defence Mobilisation Centre at De Brug Military Base near Bloemfontein.
The event will pay tribute to all SANDF members who have served and continue to serve in UN Peacekeeping Missions, both within Africa and beyond. Their unwavering commitment to peace, stability, security, and humanitarian support will be honoured in a ceremony attended by military personnel, dignitaries, and invited guests.
This local observance underscores South Africa’s active role in international peacekeeping efforts and reinforces its dedication to building a safer, more peaceful world.
