South African National Parks (SANParks) ranger teams recorded significant successes over the long weekend through coordinated operations across key areas of Table Mountain National Park.
On 23 April 2026 the SANParks K9 Unit working alongside the Sea Air Mountain (SEAM) unit conducted a targeted night operation in the southern section of the park. The operation focused on suspected abalone poaching camps and intelligence gathering. During patrols between Smitswinkel and Black Rocks K9 units tracked suspects leading to the apprehension of three individuals. A fourth suspect attempted to flee but was swiftly arrested by another K9 unit member.
While transporting suspects to the South African Police Service (SAPS) the team identified and apprehended two additional individuals linked to abalone poaching activities. All suspects were arrested, poaching equipment was confiscated and the individuals were handed over to SAPS for further processing.
In a separate incident at Lion’s Head SANParks rangers and City law enforcement intercepted a suspect attempting to flee after stealing items from a parked vehicle. The suspect was stopped before leaving the scene, stolen property was recovered and the individual admitted to the theft before being handed over to SAPS.
In another case a tip-off of suspected fynbos poaching on Devil’s Peak led to a coordinated response from the SANParks Operations Room resulting in the successful location and arrest of the suspects.
These operations highlight the continued vigilance and strong inter-agency collaboration aimed at protecting visitors and conserving South Africa’s natural heritage.
