Morocco’s Legendary C-130s Get 21st Century Upgrade
The Royal Moroccan Air Force (RMAF) is set to extend the life and elevate the capabilities of its iconic desert-camouflaged C-130H Hercules fleet, thanks to a sweeping modernisation programme led by U.S. defence giant L3Harris.

Slated to begin in 2025 at L3Harris’ Waco, Texas facility, the upgrade will overhaul avionics, engines, and mission systems—ensuring enhanced operational readiness and extended service life through to 2029. This multi-year contract also includes comprehensive depot maintenance and ongoing support, reinforcing Morocco’s investment in resilient air mobility.
Currently operating 16 C-130s across transport, refuelling, and electronic warfare missions, the RMAF’s Hercules fleet is a strategic lifeline—also deployed in critical firefighting operations using MAFFS. While Morocco has committed to procuring six Embraer C-390s as next-generation replacements, this upgrade ensures the Hercules legacy continues, firmly in step with modern mission demands.
With enthusiasts hoping the beloved desert camouflage remains untouched, Morocco’s C-130s are poised to fly farther, stronger, and smarter—long after many thought their final mission had passed.
