Morocco Supercharges Naval Arsenal with Israeli Spike and Barak Missiles
The Royal Moroccan Navy is undergoing a bold transformation, integrating cutting-edge Israeli missile systems as it modernises its fleet to meet escalating security challenges in the Mediterranean and North Africa.

As part of its strategic push, Morocco is set to upgrade its Floréal-class frigates and Avante 1800 patrol vessels with Rafael’s Spike NLOS and Barak 8 missile systems—two of Israel’s most advanced missile platforms. The move follows a deepening defence alliance sparked by the Abraham Accords and reflects Rabat’s ambition to become a regional maritime force to be reckoned with.
Lethal Precision from Afar
The Spike NLOS (Non-Line-of-Sight) missile boasts a remarkable 32 km range and precision strike capability on both land and sea targets. Its integration would give Moroccan naval forces the ability to neutralise asymmetric threats—such as maritime smuggling and terror—before they even come into visual range. Already received in June 2025, these missiles were initially destined for the Avante 1800s, but discussions are now underway to retrofit the older Floréal frigates for added offensive reach.
Defending the Skies at Sea
In tandem, the Royal Navy is exploring the Barak 8 surface-to-air missile system—jointly developed by Israel Aerospace Industries and India’s DRDO—to bolster its air defence capabilities. The stealth-ready Avante 1800 patrol vessels, fitted with 3D radars and EW suites, offer an ideal platform to counter modern aerial threats, including drones and cruise missiles.
Strategic Realignment in the Maghreb
These missile acquisitions come amid rising regional tensions, notably with Algeria, and increased militarisation across the Mediterranean. Morocco’s existing U.S.-supplied Harpoon missiles have shown limitations, especially in land-attack roles. In contrast, the Israeli systems offer flexibility, deterrence, and battlefield versatility.
New Era in Morocco–Israel Defence Ties
Since 2021, Morocco’s military cooperation with Israel has intensified through landmark agreements, hardware transfers, and joint ventures. The Spike and Barak systems now form part of a broader portfolio that includes UAVs, smart munitions, and air defence technologies.
By integrating world-class missile systems, Morocco isn’t just modernising its navy—it’s reshaping the naval security equation in North Africa and the Mediterranean.
