The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) recorded a significant operational boost on 4 February 2026 with the commissioning of a reactivated Super Puma helicopter NAF 565 at 205 Rotary Wing in Ikeja Lagos. The Chief of the Air Staff (CAS) Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke described the aircraft’s return to service as a clear demonstration of the Service’s resolve to sustain decisive airpower in defence of the nation.
Addressing personnel at the event Air Marshal Aneke said the occasion went beyond the return of a single platform noting that it reflected the NAF’s broader commitment to maintaining a highly motivated professional and mission-ready force. He emphasised that the restoration of legacy platforms remains a critical pillar in strengthening national security and ensuring operational superiority across all theatres.
The CAS expressed appreciation to President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the continued support of the Federal Government stating that the Renewed Hope Agenda is yielding tangible results through strategic acquisitions and the restoration of critical air assets.
Highlighting the importance of the Super Puma Air Marshal Aneke described the helicopter as indispensable to NAF operations. He noted that the aircraft plays a vital role in troop transport casualty evacuation search and rescue and logistics support while also proving its effectiveness during Operation Hadin Kai and other joint operations across the country.
He commended the consultant retired Air Commodore TA Badru alongside the Air Officer Commanding Mobility Command and the technicians of 205 Rotary Wing for their professionalism and technical expertise in returning the aircraft to service. The CAS urged personnel to maintain strict safety and maintenance standards stressing that discipline and a strong culture of airmanship are directly linked to sustained mission readiness.

During a durbar with personnel at Sam Ethnan Air Force Base Air Marshal Aneke highlighted an improved operational tempo across the Service and revealed that the NAF is fast-tracking the induction of advanced platforms. He assured personnel that these state-of-the-art aircraft would deliver enhanced precision strike capability and strengthen regional deterrence.
Reaffirming his welfare-focused leadership philosophy under the principle of “Welfare for Enhanced Warfare” the CAS pledged continued improvements in accommodation allowances and medical support. He encouraged personnel to remain disciplined professional and mission-focused as the Nigerian Air Force intensifies operations nationwide.
