Security forces assembled in Welkom for an operational parade ahead of Operation PROSPER, a coordinated initiative aimed at addressing illegal mining activities in the Free State.
Led by the Joint Tactical Headquarters of the Free State, the operation forms part of ongoing efforts to restore law and order in affected mining regions. The initiative brings together multiple security structures in a unified response to a growing national concern.
The South African National Defence Force has joined forces with the South African Police Service Public Order Policing units following a formal request for support. This collaboration strengthens operational capacity through integrated planning, shared intelligence, and coordinated deployment on the ground.
Prior to deployment, a joint reconnaissance was conducted involving SAPS Public Order Policing and private mine security teams. The recce provided personnel with a clearer understanding of the operational environment, enabling identification of key areas of interest and potential risk factors.
Senior SAPS leadership, including General Alfonso, Brigadier Mojije, Colonel Magage, and Lieutenant Colonel Landsman, attended the operational engagement, underscoring the strategic importance of the mission and the commitment to addressing illegal mining activities.
During the briefing, the Company Commander presented the operational plan, outlining command structure, task allocation, and coordination procedures. Emphasis was placed on discipline, teamwork, and mission effectiveness as forces prepare for deployment under Operation PROSPER.
