On 13 October 2025, the Joint Standing Committee on Defence (JSCD) and the Portfolio Committee on Defence and Military Veterans (PCDMV) conducted an oversight visit to Air Force Base (AFB) Makhado in Limpopo. The visit formed part of a week-long programme assessing border operations and key military facilities, with a focus on the South African Air Force’s (SAAF) strategic capabilities.
During the visit, Members of Parliament received a comprehensive briefing on the base’s mandate, operational functions, achievements, and the challenges it faces. Lt Gen Wiseman Mbambo, Chief of the SAAF, provided a strategic overview, highlighting financial constraints that continue to impact operational readiness. He noted that the Gripen Weapons System has been particularly affected, requiring the Air Force to resort to “cannibalisation”—using parts from non-operational aircraft to keep others flying.
Despite these challenges, the SAAF continues to demonstrate resilience, discipline, and innovation in defending South Africa’s airspace. Personnel remain committed to operational readiness and mission success, exemplifying the dedication and professionalism of South African airmen and women.
Members of Parliament, including Mr Molefi David “Dakota” Legoete, Chairperson of the PCDMV, engaged directly with pilots, flight engineers, and maintenance teams. The interaction provided MPs with first-hand insight into the realities of Air Force operations under constrained resources and reinforced Parliament’s commitment to accountability, transparency, and the effective functioning of the Department of Defence and its entities.
