Transnet Port Terminals has handed over the first batch of nine rubber-tyred gantry cranes to the Cape Town Container Terminal, marking a key step in the site’s transformation. The RTGs feature anti-sway technology and are already improving day-to-day operations, with faster container moves and shorter vessel and truck turnaround times.
Western Cape Minister of Agriculture, Economic Development and Tourism, Dr Ivan Meyer, welcomed the investment, describing it as aligned to the province’s Growth for Jobs strategy and essential for unlocking trade and employment. The handover brought together national and provincial officials alongside Transnet executives to underline the strategic value of modernising port infrastructure.
Assembly of a second RTG batch is well advanced and components for a third have arrived, signalling sustained capacity upgrades in the months ahead. The enhancements aim to bolster the terminal’s competitiveness and improve its standing in global benchmarks such as the World Bank Container Port Performance Index.
Transnet also confirmed that refurbishment of ship-to-shore cranes will begin shortly, complementing the RTG rollout and strengthening Cape Town’s role as a gateway for regional and international trade.
