Both events unfolded at Embraer’s Gavião Peixoto facility in Brazil and included a symbolic joint flight of the two aircraft—highlighting a deepening strategic partnership built on interoperability, innovation, and NATO readiness.
KC-390: Portugal’s Airlift Workhorse Grows Stronger
The third KC-390 delivery reinforces Portugal’s commitment to modernising its air mobility fleet under a six-aircraft contract, with options for ten more by NATO partners.
Designed for multi-mission flexibility, the KC-390 offers:
- Payload: 26 tonnes
- Speed: 470 knots
- Roles: Troop/cargo transport, medevac, SAR, air-to-air refuelling, firefighting
- Runway Capability: Operates from semi-prepared/unpaved surfaces
- NATO Compatibility: Fully interoperable
The aircraft is rapidly becoming a NATO favourite, now selected by 11 countries, including the Netherlands, Austria, Czech Republic, and South Korea.
“This delivery strengthens our operational capability and brings us closer to full mission readiness,” said Major-General João Nogueira of the FAP.
A-29N Super Tucano Takes Flight for NATO
The A-29N’s maiden flight marks Portugal as the launch customer for this NATO-adapted variant of Embraer’s proven light attack and training aircraft. With a 2024 order for 12 units, the A-29N is tailored for:
- Close Air Support
- Advanced Pilot Training
- Armed Reconnaissance
- FAC/JTAC Missions
It integrates NATO-compliant avionics, secure communications, and undisclosed mission enhancements—making it one of the most versatile light combat aircraft in Europe’s air arsenal.
“We’re shaping a distinct platform aligned with our operational vision,” said Major-General Nogueira.
Innovation in Action
“This joint achievement reflects our shared commitment to defence innovation and partnership,” said Bosco da Costa Junior, CEO of Embraer Defense & Security. “Portugal is not just a customer—it’s a co-creator of advanced airpower solutions.”
With over 600,000 flight hours across 290+ Super Tucanos in service worldwide, and the KC-390 gaining traction in strategic fleets globally, Embraer’s role as a NATO-aligned aerospace leader is now firmly established.
