Throughout May and June 2026, Air Force Station Port Elizabeth collaborated with the Gift of the Givers Foundation to execute a series of critical humanitarian relief missions under Exercise CHARIOT. The joint operations targeted isolated communities severely impacted by devastating floods across various regions of the Eastern Cape, including Joubertina, the Kouga Wilderness and the Baviaanskloof region. Following torrential rainfall, extensive damage to road infrastructure left multiple remote farming communities entirely cut off from essential services and supply routes. In response to the growing crisis, 15 Squadron Charlie Flight deployed its BK117 helicopter to provide vital aviation support, bridging the logistics gap where conventional ground transport was completely restricted.
Operating a BK117 helicopter, the crew—consisting of pilot Major Cornelius Johannes Oberholzer, flight engineer Sergeant Carel Van Dalen and intelligence officer Jonty Krugell—logged a total of 7.5 flight hours transporting essential food parcels, toiletries and medical supplies. A central focus of the deployment involved an intensive, multi-sortie relief operation inside the Baviaanskloof area. The crew navigated heavily degraded environmental factors, executing numerous precise drop-offs under challenging weather conditions characterized by continuous rainfall, overcast skies and severely reduced visibility. Despite these aeronautical hazards, the team successfully delivered the cargo to stranded residents who were unable to access regular markets due to washed-out infrastructure.
The success of Exercise CHARIOT relied on structured coordination between Air Force Station Port Elizabeth, provincial disaster management structures, the Gift of the Givers Foundation and local community leaders. The seamless delivery of emergency aid provided immediate survival support to vulnerable populations while civil engineering teams continue the long-term work of restoring secondary road networks. This deployment highlights the South African Air Force’s enduring capability to pivot toward domestic aid and disaster relief operations beyond its primary defense mandate. By leveraging rapid-response aviation assets and integrated logistics coordination, the SAAF continues to serve as a vital lifeline for isolated citizens during environmental emergencies, ensuring no South African stands alone in times of crisis.
