As Cape Town faces a perilous summer of high temperatures, strong winds, and dry conditions, the South African Air Force (SAAF) is stepping up to assist in combating increasingly frequent wildfires. Among the frontline assets is the Oryx helicopter fleet of 22 Squadron, based at AFB Ysterplaat, providing vital air support to ground crews across the Overberg region.
Since early last week, a massive vegetation fire has been burning between Bredasdorp and Napier, threatening farmland and rural communities. With “long and very active fire lines” reported on Sunday afternoon, coordination between ground crews, local farmers, volunteers, and SAAF assets has been critical.
The Oryx helicopter, equipped with a Bambi bucket, was deployed to douse hot spots and ferry firefighting personnel and supplies to areas unreachable by road. The operation was supported by a Huey helicopter, working in tandem to tackle shifting fire lines and ensure maximum aerial coverage. This combined effort allowed crews to respond quickly to changes in wind and terrain, helping prevent the flames from reaching Napier town.
JP Smith, Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, highlighted the growing pressure on emergency services. “The City’s Fire and Rescue Service is under relentless pressure,” he said, noting that wildfire incidents in Cape Town have risen sharply in recent years — from 5 331 fires in 2021/22 to 7 480 in 2024/25, a 40% increase.
SAAF 22 Squadron’s involvement not only enhances firefighting efficiency but also demonstrates the military’s critical role in supporting civil authorities during environmental emergencies. Oryx crews work closely with the Overberg District Municipality Fire Service, local farmers, and volunteer groups, often flying multiple sorties per day to combat active fire lines and assist with evacuations.
