The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) commemorated International United Nations (UN) Peacekeepers Day on Friday, 29 May 2026, hosting a solemn memorial service at the Department of Defence Mobilisation Centre’s Wall of Remembrance in De Brug, Bloemfontein. The annual commemoration, a staple of the SANDF’s main calendar events since 2015, paid tribute to the fallen heroes and heroines who made the ultimate sacrifice in pursuit of peace and stability across the African continent and beyond.
The memorial service and accompanying wreath-laying ceremony brought together the Minister of Defence and Military Veterans, Ms Angie Motshekga, alongside government leaders, members of the SANDF, military veterans, families of the fallen, representatives of international countries and invited guests. Together, attendees reflected on the profound sacrifices made by the brave men and women who served under the UN flag.
Addressing the occasion on behalf of the Chief of the SANDF, General Rudzani Maphwanya, the Chief of Staff of the SANDF, Lieutenant General Michael Ramantswana, honoured the courage, dedication and selflessness of the fallen peacekeepers, widely known as the “Blue Helmets.”
Lt Gen Ramantswana described these soldiers, who “died with their boots on,” as an “iron shield” who dedicated their lives to restoring peace, protecting vulnerable communities and defending humanity in conflict-affected regions under the UN flag. His address served as a poignant reminder to all present that peace comes at a great cost.
In remembering those who laid down their lives, the South African National Defence Force reaffirmed its steadfast commitment to preserving the legacy of these fallen heroes, whose bravery continues to inspire generations of soldiers and peacebuilders.
