The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) has dismissed reports suggesting that its Chief, General Rudzani Maphwanya, is defiant towards the Minister of Defence and Military Veterans, Angie Motshekga.

In a statement, the SANDF said the allegations are incorrect, misleading, and distort the facts of the matter. It added that the organisation does not discuss internal administrative matters, Ombudsman recommendations, or ministerial decisions in the media.
The SANDF described claims that General Maphwanya is “defying” or “giving the middle finger” to the Minister as baseless and irresponsible. According to the statement, General Maphwanya remains committed to the constitutional authority of the Minister and is engaging with the issue respectfully and diligently.
The SANDF confirmed that the Chief is consulting with the Minister and the Ombudsman in line with governance requirements and military protocol. It emphasised that due process is being followed, with any final outcome to be determined strictly in accordance with the law, military procedures, and the directives of the Executive Authority.
This sprang from General Maphwanya’s controversial remarks made during his visit to Iran, where he expressed solidarity with Tehran and praised shared anti‑colonial goals—statements that South African government officials swiftly distanced themselves from.
