South Africa has welcomed home the first group of 249 South African National Defence Force (SANDF) soldiers who served under the Southern African Development Community Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (SAMIDRC).
Announcing the return, Minister of Defence and Military Veterans, Angie Motshekga, praised the troops for their courage and commitment during deployment in the conflict-affected territories of Goma and Sake. Their return follows extensive regional diplomacy and demonstrable progress in peace efforts across the DRC mission area.
The withdrawal includes the return of all Prime Mission Equipment, with the SANDF reiterating that “not even a pin” will be left behind. Logistical operations are ongoing to ensure a full and safe withdrawal.
“These troops represent the pride of our nation. Their resilience and patriotism are evident, and their safe return home is a moment of national gratitude,” said Minister Motshekga.
She also acknowledged the contributions and sacrifices of SAMIDRC partners Tanzania and Malawi, and expressed condolences for the lives lost during the mission.
As part of demobilisation, returning troops will undergo psychosocial support sessions before reuniting with their families.
Delays in landing times were reported due to technical issues with the contracted airline, but SANDF officials assured the public that the soldiers are en route and will be on South African soil by today or tomorrow.
