A historic moment unfolded at Simon’s Town on Wednesday, 15 October 2025, as the South African Navy (SAN) officially commissioned its third Multi-Mission Inshore Patrol Vessel (MMIPV), SAS ADAM KOK III, and entrusted Commander Lindeni Jane Xakane with command.
The ceremony, presided over by Chief of the South African Navy, Vice Admiral Monde Lobese, was attended by senior Naval Command Council members, representatives from Damen Shipyards—builders of the vessel—and invited dignitaries. The commissioning marks a key milestone in the Navy’s ongoing Fleet rejuvenation initiative, aimed at enhancing operational readiness and maritime security capacity.
SAS ADAM KOK III was formally received and named at Salisbury Island, Naval Base Durban, on 25 April 2025. Her addition to the operational Fleet strengthens the Navy’s ability to safeguard South Africa’s maritime sovereignty and protect national interests at sea.
Vice Admiral Lobese highlighted the vessel’s strategic significance, stating: “The commissioning of SAS ADAM KOK III is not only an achievement but a reinforcement of our resolve to enhance maritime security and operational reach.”
For Commander Xakane, the moment was both personal and symbolic. “Growing up in Mamelodi, one doesn’t often get exposed to this kind of responsibility in the maritime environment. Having served 17 years in the Navy and now commanding a combat vessel fills me with immense pride, especially as a young woman,” she said.
Commander Xakane joined the SAN in 2008 and has since completed all requisite military and naval courses. Her distinguished career includes multiple sea-going appointments and key leadership roles, including Weapons Officer aboard SAS MAKHANDA (2017) and Executive Officer aboard SAS GALESHEWE and SAS MAKHANDA (2018–2021). Her operational experience spans multiple deployments under Operation COPPER, South Africa’s counter-piracy mission in the Mozambique Channel, as well as staff planning roles in naval exercises.
Appointed Officer Commanding SAS ADAM KOK III in January 2025, Commander Xakane is among the few women in the South African Navy to command a combat vessel.
The commissioning of SAS ADAM KOK III represents not only a strategic enhancement of maritime capacity but also a celebration of inclusivity, transformation, and evolving leadership within the SAN. It underscores the Navy’s continued commitment to operational excellence, innovation, and service to the Republic.
