The UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) has confirmed that a merchant vessel came under fire from small boats off Yemen’s port of Hodeidah on Saturday, in the latest sign that the Red Sea remains a dangerous flashpoint for commercial shipping.

According to UKMTO, multiple small craft approached and opened fire on the vessel, which was forced to take evasive manoeuvres. No crew injuries have been reported, and the vessel continued its journey under escort. The attackers’ identity remains unclear, but the incident comes amid persistent tensions involving Houthi-aligned groups who have previously targeted shipping lanes in the region.
Security analysts warn that these types of close-quarter attacks — combined with drone and missile threats — underscore the urgent need for coordinated naval patrols and robust self-protection measures for commercial ships transiting these critical waters.
As regional instability persists, the Red Sea’s status as a vital but vulnerable artery for global trade puts maritime security at the top of defence agendas from the Gulf to Europe.
