The French Air and Space Force has deployed two upgraded Dassault Mirage 2000D RMV aircraft to its base at Ambouli International Airport in Djibouti, marking the type’s first operational deployment since completing its midlife upgrade in April 2025. The twin-seat ground-attack jets join Mirage 2000-5F fighters to defend Djibouti’s airspace and maritime approaches while supporting air policing, surface close air protection, and secure supply line operations in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden.

The Mirage 2000D RMV (Rénovation Mi-Vie, Mid-Life Update) extends the aircraft’s operational life to at least 2035. Key enhancements include digital cockpit displays, a new mission computer, Link-16 data link integration, and MBDA Mica IR air-to-air missiles. A 30mm CC422 cannon pod has been added for close air support, while precision strike capabilities are upgraded with laser-guided munitions like the GBU-48 and GBU-50. These improvements transform the aircraft into a versatile platform able to operate in complex environments.
Prior evaluations in Djibouti in 2021 and July 2025 tested the RMV’s performance under extreme heat conditions. The French Military Air Expertise Center and the Directorate General of Flight Test Armaments validated the aircraft’s avionics, weapons systems, and cannon pod under realistic operational conditions.
The deployment strengthens France’s operational presence in the Horn of Africa, particularly as Djibouti remains its only significant military base on the continent following withdrawals from Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger. This strategic outpost will support French and allied missions for the next two decades under the renewed Defence Cooperation Treaty with Djibouti.
With in-flight refuelling support from Airbus A330 MRTT or A400M Atlas aircraft, the upgraded Mirage 2000D can conduct extended-range operations and respond rapidly to emerging threats, reaffirming France’s commitment to regional security.
