A multi-disciplinary joint operation between South Africa and Botswana was conducted along the border of the two countries from Thursday 28 August until Sunday 31 August 2025. The initiative focused on combating cross-border crimes including stock theft, human and drug trafficking as well as the prevention of illegal migration.
Security teams from both nations carried out a series of coordinated activities including compliance inspections, vehicle checkpoints, stop-and-search operations, foot and vehicle patrols along the borderline and visits to farms in the surrounding areas. The cooperation demonstrated a strong commitment from both governments to safeguard communities and strengthen regional security.
During the course of the operation vehicle checkpoints on the Witdraai and Van Zylsrus roads resulted in 294 vehicles and 589 individuals being stopped and searched. Law enforcement officials made four arrests linked to drug-related offences and contraventions of the Immigration Act with the suspects expected to appear in court soon.
In addition mandrax and khat with an estimated value of R900 were confiscated while fines amounting to R7 200 were issued for violations of the Road Traffic Act, the Liquor Act and the Animal Identification Act.
The successful operation highlights the importance of cross-border collaboration in tackling transnational crimes and maintaining the safety and security of communities on both sides of the border.
