South Africa’s Border Management Authority (BMA) has successfully concluded one of its largest and most complex operational deployments to date, ensuring the smooth and secure entry of global leaders and high-level delegations attending the G20 Leaders’ Summit.
Over the course of the week-long arrival phase, BMA operations remained stable, coordinated and incident-free across all designated Ports of Entry. The authority processed the arrival of numerous Heads of State and Government, including EU President Ursula von der Leyen, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, President of the European Council António Costa, Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh, China’s Premier Li Qiang and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer among others.
The sustained tempo of arrivals placed significant demand on South Africa’s border infrastructure. However, the BMA’s intensified operational posture – supported by pre-positioned personnel, enhanced ICT capability and multi-agency coordination – ensured that the increased traffic associated with the G20 was handled without disruption.
The authority also facilitated the entry of hundreds of delegates for the G20 Sherpa meetings, the G20 Social Summit and the B20 Summit in the days leading up to the main event. Despite heightened security protocols, expanded screening requirements and surging traveller volumes, processing times remained efficient.
Key points of entry including OR Tambo International Airport, Lanseria International Airport and Waterkloof Air Force Base operated with full technical and staffing capacity. BMA ICT technicians were deployed on-site throughout the period to ensure uninterrupted systems performance while dedicated G20 processing counters helped streamline flows for official delegations.
According to BMA Commissioner Dr Michael Masiapato, the successful completion of the arrivals phase demonstrates the maturity of South Africa’s integrated border management system and its ability to support major diplomatic and multilateral events. “Our operations have proven that the BMA can manage complex, high-pressure environments while maintaining secure and efficient processing,” he said following the conclusion of delegation arrivals.
With the summit now underway, the BMA continues to support ongoing movements of officials and security teams, providing a critical layer of national security and logistical continuity throughout the G20 period.
