22 Squadron, based at Air Force Base Ysterplaat in the Western Cape, played a vital role in combating the recent wildfires over the weekend of 10 and 11 January 2026, which continue to threaten the Hermanus and Stanford areas. With fast-spreading flames endangering communities and natural reserves, the Squadron’s Oryx helicopter was rapidly deployed to provide critical aerial firefighting support.
The mission was flown by an experienced and dedicated crew, with Major Warren “Chico” Jobe as Oryx commander, Major Harvey “Buksie” Strauss as co-pilot and Sergeant Hanroh “Wouter” Nortjé as flight engineer. Working as a seamless team, they conducted more than 100 water drops using the bambi bucket under challenging conditions, helping to slow the spread of the fires and support ground firefighting efforts.
Equally important to the success of the operation was the work carried out behind the scenes. Ground crew from 22 Squadron and Air Force Base Overberg ensured the Oryx was serviceable, refuelled and ready to fly at short notice, enabling sustained operations when they were needed most.
This deployment once again highlighted the professionalism, skill and commitment of the South African Air Force in serving the people of South Africa. Sincere thanks go to everyone involved, aircrew and ground crew alike, for their dedication and teamwork in making the operation a success.
